On Friday, the company revealed its plans during a high-level roundtable with the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA). Specifically, the long-term goal is a lunar landing by 2032. The meeting brought together top technology officers from LG Electronics, LG Energy Solution, and LG Innotek. During the event, these affiliates showcased their space-related advancements and reaffirmed their commitment to the sector.
According to company officials, this new direction marks a strategic move into the growing space industry. Although still in its early stages, the group emphasized its serious interest in assessing long-term possibilities. In fact, officials described it as a necessary step to identify promising business opportunities beyond Earth. “We are entering an exploratory phase,” an LG official said. “Our teams are evaluating realistic paths in space environments. We will identify where our technologies best apply.”
One example of past success discussed was LG Energy Solution’s work with NASA. Notably, in 2016, NASA chose the company as a battery supplier for its extravehicular mobility units, or spacesuits. This collaboration underscores LG’s long-standing expertise in high-reliability power systems. Moreover, LG used the roundtable to express support for space-focused startups. Executives stressed that nurturing these ventures is essential for creating a sustainable space economy. In addition, they outlined potential plans to collaborate with new companies developing orbital and lunar technologies.
Yoon Young-bin, who heads KASA, strongly welcomed LG’s interest. He emphasized the importance of private sector leadership in Korea’s space future. “KASA will provide full support for private companies entering the space field,” he said. “We’re committed to making the environment business-friendly and globally competitive.” Furthermore, KASA intends to build an ecosystem where innovation thrives. By doing so, and by working closely with conglomerates like LG, KASA hopes to accelerate South Korea’s journey into the global space market.
Ultimately, although LG Group space ambitions remain in the early stages, the intent is clear. The group plans to invest in technologies that can thrive in extreme environments. They aim to turn research into commercially viable applications.
