Rising Taiwanese pianist Lin Hao-wei is taking on the Chopin Competition Challenge with determination. At just 21 years old, Lin has secured a spot in the preliminary round of the 19th Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland. This prestigious contest, held every five years, attracts the world’s best pianists. It features three intense rounds before the finals in October.
Lin is not alone in facing the Chopin Competition Challenge. Two other talented Taiwanese pianists also qualified this year. However, Lin’s story stands out because of his rigorous preparation and mental strength. In a recent interview, he revealed he practices piano seven to eight hours daily. He emphasized that the competition tests not only skill but also willpower and courage.
Like many young musicians, Lin experienced obstacles during his preparation. He struggled with insomnia and arm inflammation due to intense practice sessions. Despite these setbacks, he adjusted his technique and learned to stay present in the moment. Lin shared, “I don’t feel the need to be better than others, but I want to be less afraid.” This mindset reflects his maturity and readiness to face the Chopin Competition Challenge.
Lin started playing piano at six years old. Over the years, he has earned several accolades, including second place at the Epinal International Piano Competition in France. Additionally, he won third place and the Audience Award at the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. These achievements show his steady rise as a classical music star.
After graduating from National Taiwan Normal University’s affiliated high school, Lin studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. There, he trained under a renowned Georgian pianist who helped him grow artistically and technically. Over the past eighteen months, Lin focused exclusively on preparing for the Chopin Competition Challenge, refining his repertoire and deepening his interpretation of Chopin’s delicate music.
Lin explained, “Chopin’s pieces require more than just playing. You must listen, think, and breathe with the music.” Now, instead of feeling nervous, Lin experiences a calm determination. “I want to complete every note and every performance without regret.”
In the lead-up to the competition, Lin will showcase his skills in two recitals. These will take place on August 21 and August 23 at Taipei’s Eslite Performance Hall. The performances will include works from the first three stages of the Chopin Competition, giving audiences a glimpse of his artistry and passion. The Chopin Competition Challenge continues to test Lin Hao-wei’s limits. Yet, with his talent and dedication, he stands poised to make a strong impression on the global stage.
