As Ambassador Ričardas Šlepavičius concludes his tenure in Mongolia, he reflects on achievements that strengthened Lithuania-Mongolia relations. Notably, he promoted educational and cultural collaboration, leaving a lasting impact on both nations.
Throughout his career, Ambassador Šlepavičius served in Russia, Türkiye, Italy, and at Lithuania’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. Consequently, he brought a wealth of experience to his work in Asia. While adapting to a new environment, he found Mongolia both fascinating and rewarding.
During his tenure, the Ambassador organized a full symphony concert at the Mongolian National Philharmonic. This event celebrated Lithuania’s independence and the birthday of composer M.K. Čiurlionis. The performance united Lithuanian and Mongolian musicians, highlighting cultural dialogue and mutual respect. Furthermore, he praised the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Mongolia, Sainbayar Davaabat, for promoting active cooperation.
In addition, Ambassador Šlepavičius initiated partnerships between Mongolian students and Lithuanian universities. These programs provide scholarships and commercial study opportunities. As a result, more Mongolian students pursue higher education in Lithuania each year. The Ambassador emphasized that these exchanges create lasting connections and foster future collaboration.
Moreover, scientific cooperation flourished. Researchers from Vilnius University and the National University of Mongolia studied climate change effects on Mongolia’s ecosystems. This project, fully supported by the Lithuanian Embassy, opened new avenues for academic and environmental collaboration.
He also admired Mongolia’s balance of tradition and modernity. The people’s dedication to democracy, human rights, and national heritage left a deep impression. Their warmth and curiosity reminded him of Lithuania’s own values. During events such as cultural celebrations, he noted the eagerness of Mongolians to engage with foreign countries, including Lithuania.
Looking ahead, he identified key areas for future cooperation. Specifically, transportation, logistics, digitalization, cyber security, and innovation can expand bilateral trade and strengthen economic ties. Lithuania can serve as a gateway to the EU, while supporting Mongolia’s startup ecosystem and fostering entrepreneurship.
Finally, the Ambassador expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Mongolian people for their hospitality and collaboration. He encouraged continued student exchanges, cultural programs, and joint projects to further strengthen Lithuania-Mongolia relations. With mutual effort, both nations can build a prosperous and innovative future together.
