Mongolia and Austria Strengthen Ties in Historic State Visit

Date:

The State Visit of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen of Austria to Mongolia concluded on May 28, 2025. During this historic visit, both countries took significant steps to strengthen their partnership. The leaders of Mongolia and Austria held official talks that emphasized shared values and future collaboration.

President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa of Mongolia and Federal President Van der Bellen agreed to deepen ties based on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Moreover, they pledged to broaden cooperation in various fields such as politics, economy, education, and science. This State Visit marks the first time a head of state from Austria has officially visited Mongolia, making it a landmark event for both nations.

In addition, the two Presidents focused on supporting Mongolia’s ambitious long-term plans. For example, they discussed Mongolia’s “Vision-2050” policy and the “Billions of Trees” National Movement. Furthermore, they agreed to work together on the “President’s Scholar-2100” Scholarship Program. The collaboration also extends to infrastructure, agriculture, public health, climate action, tourism, technology, and student exchanges.

One of the most important outcomes was the signing of a “Joint Declaration between Mongolia and the Republic of Austria.” This declaration represents a historic milestone and signals a new chapter in bilateral cooperation. In particular, the two countries agreed on a Social Security Agreement. This pact creates legal protections allowing citizens to receive pensions for contributions made in either Mongolia or Austria. It ensures social security and easier conditions for living and working in both countries.

Additionally, Mongolia and Austria decided to extend their previous financial agreement. They also plan to increase investments in health and education sectors. Alongside these agreements, the Mongolia-Austria Business Forum took place. This forum, co-organized by the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO), featured 80 Mongolian companies and 22 Austrian companies. It opened doors for greater business collaboration between the two nations.

Finally, Federal President Van der Bellen departed from Chinggis Khaan International Airport. He received a warm farewell from Mongolia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Battsetseg Batmunkh and Austrian Ambassador Andreas Riecken, among others. Overall, the State Visit strengthened the partnership between Mongolia and Austria and set the stage for ongoing cooperation.
