Mongolia Opens Billions of Trees Pavilion at COP17

Date:

Mongolia opened a dedicated Billions of Trees pavilion within COP17’s Green Zone on August 18. This pavilion aims to inform the public about progress achieved under this flagship environmental initiative. Consequently, visitors can now access comprehensive details regarding implementation and measurable results nationwide.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sandag-Ochir Tsend attended the opening ceremony alongside several notable officials. Additionally, presidential advisor Sandagsuren J joined representatives from organizations and businesses supporting this national movement. Together, they celebrated significant milestones achieved since launching this ambitious afforestation campaign years ago.

According to officials, more than 140 million trees have been planted across Mongolia since inception. This Billions of Trees movement specifically targets climate change, desertification and broader land degradation challenges nationwide. Furthermore, the initiative focuses on restoring ecosystems while expanding forest protection and afforestation efforts significantly.

Minister Sandag-Ochir highlighted measurable progress, noting forested areas initially covered just 7.9 percent of Mongolia’s territory. Since then, however, that figure has increased to 8.71 percent nationwide. Therefore, this growth demonstrates tangible environmental impact resulting from sustained implementation of the Billions of Trees campaign.

Beyond domestic achievements, Mongolia intends to share valuable lessons and innovative solutions with international COP17 attendees. Specifically, officials hope to expand cooperation surrounding ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation and sustainable land management practices. Consequently, this pavilion serves as both a showcase and a platform for broader international collaboration.

Given Mongolia’s vulnerability to desertification, this initiative carries significant importance for long-term environmental and economic stability. Furthermore, showcasing these results during COP17 could strengthen Mongolia’s position within global climate discussions moving forward. Therefore, officials view this pavilion as an opportunity to attract further international partnerships and support.

Looking ahead, continued expansion of the Billions of Trees movement will likely remain central to Mongolia’s environmental strategy. Given current momentum, officials appear optimistic about sustaining growth in forested territory throughout the coming years ahead.
