Mongolia Champions Special Olympics Movement for Inclusion

Date:

Mongolia is currently hosting the Regional Conference of the Special Olympics International. To attend the event, Mary Davis, Chief Executive of Special Olympics, and regional directors traveled to Mongolia. Consequently, the Prime Minister warmly welcomed the delegation.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Zandanshatar clearly expressed his strong support for the Special Olympics Movement. Moreover, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting inclusive policies in education, sports, and social development.

Meanwhile, Oyun Sanjaasuren, Chairperson of Special Olympics Mongolia, highlighted past challenges faced by children from special needs schools. She explained that previously, these children had limited chances to participate in sports competitions.

However, the Special Olympics Movement has changed this by providing physical and social development opportunities for these children. As a result, this support has helped them gain public recognition as equal members of society. Additionally, Sanjaasuren stressed that the government’s backing remains a vital force driving these positive changes.

Mary Davis expressed deep gratitude for the Prime Minister’s warm reception. Furthermore, she shared that the Special Olympics Movement started in the United States and has grown to include 175 member countries worldwide.

Davis also explained that the movement goes beyond training athletes; it aims to showcase their talents. Through competitions, the movement raises global awareness of the skills and potential of children with intellectual disabilities.

The Special Olympics Movement focuses on promoting inclusion of children and youth with intellectual disabilities through sports. Mongolia officially joined the movement several years ago. Currently, over 1,000 Special Olympics athletes represent Mongolia.

A unique feature of the movement is its Unified Sports format. In this format, athletes with and without intellectual disabilities compete together on the same team.

This approach builds mutual understanding and encourages social inclusion. Moreover, the movement uses sports as a transformative tool. Therefore, it fosters development and empowers athletes by uniting them through competition.

Overall, the Special Olympics Movement remains a powerful platform to promote equality and inclusion. Mongolia’s ongoing support clearly showcases the country’s commitment to these values.
