Mongolia Parliament Confirms Uchral Nyam-Osor as 35th Prime Minister

Date:

Mongolia’s State Great Khural confirmed Uchral Nyam-Osor as the country’s 35th Prime Minister on March 30, 2026. This economic stability priority drove the swift confirmation, as lawmakers cited the urgent need to form a functioning government. President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa formally presented the nomination to parliament. The ruling Mongolian People’s Party had submitted Uchral’s name on March 29.

The Democratic Party caucus head Tsogtgerel Odon requested a one-day recess before the vote. However, Deputy Speaker Bat-Erdene Jadamba granted only a one-hour break instead. He cited the urgent need to ensure continuity of state operations. After the recess, lawmakers questioned Uchral on several pressing issues. These included the global economic crisis from the Iran war and the state-owned enterprise problem.

Uchral emphasized keeping import prices stable during his testimony. He promised to cut back on bureaucratic red tape. He would either reform state-owned enterprises or eliminate them. As prime minister, he would move quickly upon taking office. His first priority would be ranking and sequencing the country’s major infrastructure projects. Consequently, this economic stability agenda won over the parliament.

Of the 107 members present at the session, 88 voted in favor of appointing Uchral. That represents 82.2 percent of the vote. The confirmation came after a week of rapid political changes. Former Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav had resigned on March 27. He stepped down voluntarily after nine months in office. Zandanshatar’s tenure saw coal exports reach 90 million tons and economic growth rise from 2.6 to 6.8 percent.

Uchral brings extensive government experience to the role. He has served as a Member of Parliament since 2016. His previous positions include Minister of Digital Development and Communications, Chief of the Cabinet Secretariat, Deputy Prime Minister, and Speaker of the State Great Khural. He also became Chairman of the Mongolian People’s Party in November 2025.

Uchral holds multiple advanced degrees. He earned a law degree from Ikh Zasag University in 2007. Moreover, he completed a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Limkokwing in 2010. He also obtained a PhD in History from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013. Thus, this diverse educational background supports his approach to economic stability and governance.

The new Prime Minister inherits a complex economic situation. Global energy market disruptions from the Middle East war threaten Mongolia’s trade balance. The opposition Democratic Party has boycotted parliament sessions. Therefore, Uchral must resolve this boycott while managing economic pressures. His promise to prioritize infrastructure projects aims to maintain economic stability.

Uchral’s confirmation ends a week of political uncertainty. The rapid transition from Zandanshatar’s resignation to Uchral’s confirmation demonstrates the MPP’s organizational strength. The party holds a parliamentary majority from the 2024 general elections. This majority enabled the swift confirmation process.

In conclusion, Mongolia’s parliament confirmed Uchral Nyam-Osor as the 35th Prime Minister on March 30, 2026. The vote was 88-0 with 107 members present. Uchral emphasized economic stability during his testimony, promising to keep import prices stable, reform state-owned enterprises, and prioritize infrastructure projects. His confirmation followed former Prime Minister Zandanshatar’s resignation on March 27. Uchral brings extensive government experience and advanced degrees to the role. He must now deliver on his economic stability promises while managing global disruptions and resolving the opposition boycott. Ultimately, his success will depend on implementing his infrastructure priorities and maintaining the economic growth achieved under his predecessor.
