Mongolia is stepping up efforts to protect its rich biodiversity by focusing on migratory bird conservation. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change Batbaatar Bat recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BirdLife International CEO Martin Harper.
The agreement outlines a shared mission to protect birds, habitats, and migratory routes. This supports Mongolia’s promises under international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Ramsar Convention.
Mongolia and BirdLife International plan to implement joint projects on the ground. These include mapping biodiversity hotspots and protecting wetlands crucial to migratory birds. The partners also agreed to assess human activity impacts and respond with nature-friendly planning tools.
To improve migratory bird conservation, they will create national plans tailored to bird species. They will also localize global biodiversity standards. The plan includes updating IUCN Red List assessments and crafting bird-focused conservation strategies.
Special attention will go to reducing harm from infrastructure and megaprojects. To counter such threats, the team will develop bird-safe design guidelines and apply scientific planning methods.
Mongolia will also prioritize data sharing and capacity building. Experts from both sides will train local staff and offer technical support to conservation groups. In turn, these efforts will expand local expertise and protect bird habitats more effectively.
Research and public education form another key part of the initiative. The Ministry of Environment will work with BirdLife International to run awareness campaigns. These will focus on the importance of migratory bird conservation and highlight the role of communities in protecting birds during their breeding seasons.
They also plan to set up working groups to boost regional cooperation. These groups will exchange knowledge, monitor bird populations, and advocate for conservation at the grassroots level. With these actions, Mongolia is taking a strong step toward localizing global efforts and ensuring lasting results in migratory bird conservation.
