Mongolia, US cooperation took center stage during a recent high-level meeting in Ulaanbaatar. Bulgantuya Khurelbaatar, Deputy Chairwoman and Member of Mongolia’s State Great Khural (Parliament), welcomed a delegation from the United States House of Representatives. The group included Ed Case, Ami Bera, Dr. Neal P. Dunn, Sara Jacobs, and Jonathan L. Jackson.
At the start of the meeting, Deputy Chairwoman Bulgantuya expressed her excitement in hosting the U.S. lawmakers. She called the United States an important “third neighbor” and strategic partner for Mongolia. Although Mongolia and the U.S. lie far apart geographically, the Deputy Chairwoman pointed out that the U.S. has consistently supported Mongolia’s democratic growth and market economy development.
Furthermore, Bulgantuya emphasized that recent visits and multilateral meetings have strengthened political ties. These efforts have also deepened cooperation between the two countries on regional and international issues. She specifically mentioned the May launch of United Airlines flights connecting Tokyo and Ulaanbaatar. Additionally, she highlighted the success of the “Travel Responsibly” campaign, which has helped boost tourism.
Looking ahead, Deputy Chairwoman Bulgantuya expressed Mongolia’s keen interest in expanding collaboration in several key areas. These include energy, strategically important mineral resources, tourism, and space exploration. She emphasized Mongolia’s readiness to work closely with the United States to unlock new opportunities.
Congressman Ed Case echoed this sentiment by suggesting the creation of a joint research group. This group would explore further investment possibilities in Mongolia. Moreover, he praised Mongolia for having a higher proportion of women lawmakers than the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Case expressed a strong willingness to collaborate on strengthening parliamentary democracy.
Other members of Mongolia’s State Great Khural present at the meeting included Erdenebold Sukhbaatar, Saranchuluun Otgon, Anar Chinbaatar, and Undraa Agvaanluvsan. It is worth noting that Mongolia and the United States officially established diplomatic relations on January 27, 1987.
