Morin Khuur Craftsmanship Shines at Exhibition in Kyrgyz Republic

Date:

During the State Visit of Mongolia’s President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa to the Kyrgyz Republic, the “Beautiful Country of Mongolia” Morin Khuur exhibition opened in Bishkek. This event highlighted the deep cultural roots and artistic mastery of Morin Khuur craftsmanship, which is central to Mongolian heritage.

The exhibition attracted many visitors eager to explore this unique musical tradition. Throughout the state visit, Mongolia organized a series of cultural activities. Notably, the Morin Khuur Ensemble performed live, captivating audiences with the enchanting sounds of the horsehead fiddle.

In addition, the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Mongolia presented performances that reflected Mongolia’s rich artistic history. These events complemented the exhibition by bringing Morin Khuur craftsmanship to life. The Morin Khuur is more than just a musical instrument; it is a symbol of the Mongol people’s history, spirit, and aspirations.

This traditional horsehead fiddle has been recognized by UNESCO as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage. Consequently, promoting Morin Khuur craftsmanship plays a vital role in preserving this cultural legacy and sharing it globally.

In recent years, efforts to support Morin Khuur craftsmanship have gained momentum. President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa issued a decree titled “Honoring and Promoting the Morin Khuur.” This decree encourages the development of the craft sector, helping artisans refine their skills and produce high-quality instruments. As a result, the Morin Khuur industry in Mongolia has been expanding rapidly, boosting both cultural pride and economic opportunities.

Adding to the cultural significance, the world marked the first-ever “World Horse Day” on July 11, 2025. This celebration ties closely to the Morin Khuur’s origins, which are deeply connected to horses, an essential element of Mongolian life and identity. Thus, the timing of the exhibition and the President’s visit helped highlight this important relationship.

The exhibition in Bishkek allowed visitors to appreciate the fine craftsmanship behind each Morin Khuur. Skilled artisans demonstrated traditional techniques, showcasing the artistry involved in creating these beautiful instruments. Moreover, the event strengthened cultural ties between Mongolia and the Kyrgyz Republic.

In conclusion, the Morin Khuur craftsmanship exhibition not only celebrated Mongolia’s rich heritage but also helped bring international attention to this unique art form. Through live performances, exhibitions, and government support, the Morin Khuur continues to inspire and connect people worldwide.
