North Korea celebrated the 80th anniversary of its air force as leader Kim Jong-un attended the ceremony. He announced that the air force would receive new strategic military assets and take on important new duties.
The event occurred Friday at Kalma Airport, home to the 59th Kil Yong Jo Hero Flying Group under the Second Air Wing. Kim emphasized the air force’s role in nuclear deterrence and in defending the country’s airspace.
He stated the air force must “resolutely repulse and control espionage acts and military provocations.” Analysts said this shows Pyongyang’s focus on strengthening both conventional and strategic capabilities.
Kim’s daughter, Ju-ae, attended the ceremony. This marked her first public appearance since accompanying her father to Beijing in September. Her presence signals political continuity and internal messaging.
The ceremony featured an air demonstration, art performances, and the awarding of the Kim Jong Il Order. These events reinforced the symbolic and operational importance of the air force.
Earlier this year, North Korea advanced its aerial capabilities. In March, it unveiled a domestically produced airborne early warning and control aircraft. In May, the country conducted its first live-fire air-to-air drill involving fighter jets.
Experts note that Air Force Expansion also reflects the country’s effort to diversify platforms supporting its nuclear deterrent. Analysts expect further exercises and the introduction of advanced strike aircraft.
Moving forward, North Korea aims to maintain balance between nuclear deterrence, conventional force modernization, and regional strategic influence. Air Force Expansion remains a central element of its military strategy.
