North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inaugurated a new industrial complex on the outskirts of Pyongyang, emphasizing regional development. He attended the event in Kangdong County with his wife Ri Sol-ju and daughter Ju-ae, marking a rare public family appearance.
The complex includes a food processing plant and a multifunctional service facility. Kim said the projects reflect his plan to narrow economic gaps between urban and rural areas. He described advancing regional development as a “sacred undertaking” requiring unwavering commitment from party officials and local workers.
State media released photos showing Kim cutting the ribbon and touring the facilities. Experts noted that Ju-ae’s presence highlights the regime’s increasing focus on economic and social development rather than military activities alone.
Kim previously visited Kangdong County in February to attend the groundbreaking of a hospital and service facility, which authorities completed in November. The facilities aim to provide local residents with improved healthcare, employment opportunities, and essential services.
The ruling Workers’ Party of Korea recently identified 20 cities and counties for targeted investment under the regional development initiative. Officials plan to expand industrial, healthcare, and service projects to stimulate local economies and strengthen self-sufficiency.
Observers say showcasing regional development achievements helps Kim reinforce political legitimacy and social cohesion. Including Ju-ae in economic-focused events also links succession planning with domestic development priorities.
Looking forward, authorities will continue pushing regional development in additional counties. Projects will focus on improving living standards, increasing employment, and ensuring local officials fully support party policies.
