North Korea has issued a sharp statement confirming its inter-Korean relations rejection. Kim Yo-jong, sister of leader Kim Jong-un, dismissed Seoul’s recent gestures as a futile effort. She declared that North Korea has no intention of improving ties and will even enshrine this stance in its constitution.
Seoul recently suspended propaganda broadcasts, dismantled its border loudspeakers, and adjusted military drills with Washington to encourage dialogue. Officials claimed Pyongyang responded by removing some of its own loudspeakers. However, Kim firmly denied this, calling it an unfounded claim meant to mislead.
She also criticized the postponement of nearly half the Ulchi Freedom Shield military drills, labeling it meaningless and unworthy of praise. The drills, originally scheduled for August 18-28, were partly delayed in what Seoul likely saw as an appeasement move.
According to Kim, expecting positive change from these steps reflects a foolish calculation. She accused Seoul of trying to shift blame for tensions while seeking international support. The inter-Korean relations rejection, she stressed, is absolute, regardless of Seoul’s military or propaganda decisions.
Kim reiterated that Pyongyang is uninterested in dialogue with Washington as long as denuclearization remains the focus. She dismissed speculation about any indirect message to the United States via Russian President Vladimir Putin during his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
North Korea’s position signals continued strain in inter-Korean ties despite Seoul’s concessions. The firm inter-Korean relations rejection underscores a deep political divide and suggests that upcoming diplomatic openings are unlikely. With both sides holding fast to opposing security priorities, the prospect for meaningful talks remains dim.
