North Korea marked the 80th anniversary of its ruling Workers’ Party with celebrations emphasizing retiree welfare benefits. The events highlighted the social welfare system and honored older citizens for their lifelong contributions.
Social welfare centers across the country hosted the events. These centers were established under Kim Jong Un and are managed by provincial people’s committees. They provide retirees with social benefits and political recognition for patriotic service.
In South Hwanghae Province, officials organized an event for about 80 retirees on the outskirts of Haeju. Participants included a factory engineer with over 40 years of service. The provincial party committee head toasted the retirees, saying the party “embraces the people until the end of their lives.” Attendees commented that no other country treats older citizens so well.
The gathering was called a “special reception for people receiving nutrition recovery benefits” to address malnutrition. Retirees received high-protein and high-calorie meals, including steamed eggs and fish balls. Medical staff monitored blood pressure and overall nutrition.
After the meal, each retiree received a gift pack with rice, cooking oil, sugar, soap, towels, and a card bearing Kim Jong Un’s name and the slogan, “The fatherland holds you close throughout your life.” A photo exhibit and commemorative session highlighted retirees’ lives and work. Many participants reportedly cried, showing the impact of retiree welfare benefits.
Experts note the events serve both social and political purposes. They reinforce the party’s image and demonstrate tangible benefits for older citizens. Officials indicated that similar programs will continue nationwide, strengthening retiree welfare benefits as part of North Korea’s social system.
The nationwide celebrations underline North Korea’s focus on retiree welfare benefits while promoting the party’s social commitment.
