North Korean Markets Struggle as Soaring Heat Drives Up Awning Costs

Date:

North Korean markets are under heavy strain as vendors face record summer heat and steep awning prices. Street merchants urgently need shade to protect both themselves and their products, yet most cannot afford the rising costs. Consequently, umbrellas remain the most common option, though they offer little real relief.

In Hyesan and other regions, demand for awnings has risen sharply. The extreme heat makes business nearly impossible without some form of cover. Moreover, while a few merchants purchase awnings on credit, most simply cannot manage the cost. Imports from China now sell for 400 to 900 yuan depending on size, a sharp increase from earlier years. As a result, many traders continue to work unprotected despite severe discomfort.

The situation is especially difficult for ice cream and drink sellers. Their products require cooler conditions, making shade essential. Young vendors, worried about reputation and status, sometimes borrow money to purchase awnings. They believe looking professional helps attract more customers. However, countless other traders remain exposed, prioritizing goods over personal comfort. Many endure sunburns and peeling skin as they try to survive daily trade.

Awnings have now become both a necessity and a symbol of success in North Korean markets. This has created strong demand for cheaper substitutes. Some traders expect lower-cost, locally made awnings to appear soon, though they may be less durable. Furthermore, some vendors rely on smugglers or small-scale suppliers to find affordable alternatives.

Despite these struggles, merchants continue to adapt. Many have shifted into selling cold foods and drinks, hoping to profit from hot weather. This has created new opportunities but also greater competition. Moreover, overcrowded stalls and streets worsen the lack of shade, making the heat even harder to endure.

In conclusion, North Korean markets face growing pressure from rising temperatures and unaffordable awnings. Vendors need solutions that balance cost with effectiveness. Unless more affordable options emerge, many traders will remain exposed, highlighting the severe financial and social challenges facing street commerce.
