Overseas Call Block: Japan Launches New App Feature to Combat Phone Fraud

Date:

The Metropolitan Police Department in Japan has introduced an overseas call block feature amid a surge in phone scams. Overseas Call Block will be integrated into the Digi Police app starting in December, allowing users to mute calls from suspicious international numbers.

So-called special fraud has escalated rapidly this year. According to the National Police Agency, reported losses from January to June totaled ¥59.7 billion, roughly 2.6 times higher than the same period last year. The agency noted that 63,966 scam calls occurred, with 70% originating from overseas.

The new feature will mute ringtones or vibrations for calls from international numbers not saved in users’ contacts. Smartphone owners can activate the function by downloading the Digi Police app.

Call log displays differ by operating system. Android users can choose whether to show blocked calls, while iPhone users see call logs by default. Additionally, iPhones will mute domestic calls not in the contact list.

A senior MPD official highlighted the importance of the feature, stating, “Simply not answering international calls can significantly prevent harm.” The official also acknowledged that iPhone users may face minor inconveniences but encouraged widespread adoption.

Police hope the overseas call block will reduce financial damage and protect vulnerable populations, including the elderly, who are frequent targets of scams. The feature also complements broader crime prevention initiatives aimed at digital security.

Experts note that proactive measures like call-blocking apps can mitigate fraud risks while reducing the workload on law enforcement. By integrating technology into public safety strategies, authorities aim to respond to increasingly sophisticated international scams.

The overseas call block represents a growing trend in using mobile technology to combat financial crime. Future updates may include AI-driven call identification and additional protections for domestic users. Police will continue monitoring the program’s effectiveness and adjust features based on user feedback.

Citizens are urged to install the Digi Police app, activate the overseas call block feature, and report suspicious calls. Authorities emphasize that combining technological solutions with public awareness remains critical in preventing phone fraud in Japan.
