China-born giant pandas Huan Huan and Yuan Zi arrived safely in Chengdu on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone. After flying from France, they were immediately transferred to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. There, they will spend at least one month in quarantine and medical observation. The giant panda return demonstrates China’s commitment to wildlife protection and international conservation cooperation.
Huan Huan, a female born in August 2008, and Yuan Zi, a male born in September 2008, had lived at Beauval Zoo in Saint-Aignan, France, since January 2012. To ensure their safe journey, Chinese keepers and veterinarians traveled to France.
During preparation, the team studied the pandas’ habits, assisted with behavioral training, conducted health checks, and accompanied French veterinarians. Consequently, the careful preparation ensured their safety and well-being. The giant panda return highlights China’s attention to animal welfare and meticulous planning.
While in France, Huan Huan and Yuan Zi produced three cubs across two litters. Huan Huan gave birth to Yuan Meng in August 2017. Later, she delivered twins, Huan Lili and Yuan Dudu, in August 2021. Importantly, their names incorporated cultural elements from Paris and Chengdu, symbolizing friendship and cooperation.
The Chengdu research base confirmed the twins will remain in France until January 2027, when the current phase of the conservation project concludes. Furthermore, the giant panda return project strengthened scientific research, personnel training, and technical exchanges.
The program also promoted public education about wildlife protection in both countries. Through panda-themed exhibitions and outreach activities, it encouraged conservation awareness and strengthened international ties.
Officials highlighted that the giant panda return improves global attention to endangered species protection. In addition, they stressed that China will continue using this project to advance scientific research, international cooperation, and conservation practices. The program aims to safeguard pandas’ health and foster worldwide interest in wildlife preservation.
