China’s People’s Liberation Army conducted a bomber formation patrol in the South China Sea to show military strength. The patrol followed the Philippines’ joint exercises with external forces, which Beijing considers provocative. The PLA Southern Theater Command announced the operation on Sunday, stating the patrol occurred on Friday. Senior Colonel Tian Junli emphasized the maneuver was routine but served as a clear warning to provocateurs. He criticized the Philippines for cooperating with external powers and urged immediate cessation of escalatory actions.
Tian said the theater command remains on high alert to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and regional stability. He added that any attempts to infringe on China’s territory will not succeed. This is the first time the PLA announced a bomber formation patrol responding directly to Philippine-led joint exercises.
The announcement followed reports that the United States and Japan joined the Philippines in a two-day maritime exercise. Beijing views these multilateral activities as a threat to regional peace and a challenge to its sovereignty.
Military analyst Song Zhongping said bombers are among the PLA’s most important strike assets. He explained the patrol demonstrates offensive capability and can conduct saturation attacks against larger naval forces. Song added that the maneuver also warns potential provocateurs and strengthens deterrence in contested waters.
Observers note the PLA has diversified operational tactics in the South China Sea, integrating air, naval, and missile systems. The bomber formation patrol reflects improvements in weaponry and operational readiness, sending a strategic message to regional powers and foreign forces.
Analysts expect the PLA to conduct similar patrols in response to joint exercises and aggressive maneuvers. The bomber formation patrol may become a recurring measure, signaling China’s determination to defend its maritime interests.
