Rainwater Drainage Pipelines Expansion in Ulaanbaatar

Date:

Ulaanbaatar is taking important steps to improve flood management. In 2026, the city will install 30 kilometers of rainwater drainage pipelines in areas most at risk of flooding. The Agency for Land Administration and Management, Geodesy, and Cartography (ALAMGC) will manage the project. This move is part of the city’s broader efforts to strengthen its drainage systems.

Ulaanbaatar has more than 1,260 kilometers of paved roads, but only 23.6 percent—around 300 kilometers—currently feature rainwater drainage systems. In the past two years, the city has added 40 kilometers of drainage pipelines.

In 2024, the city focused on flood-prone areas and installed 27 kilometers of pipelines. This year, officials aim to install another 16 kilometers across 10 different locations. To date, crews have completed 8.6 kilometers in eight areas.

These rainwater drainage pipelines are crucial to reducing flooding in Ulaanbaatar. Heavy rainfall often leads to significant water accumulation in the city’s low-lying areas. This disrupts daily life, damages property, and poses health risks. Upgrading the drainage system is therefore essential for the city’s long-term resilience.

The Governor’s Office of Ulaanbaatar notes that while progress is being made, challenges remain. More areas still require improved drainage to prevent future flooding. The 30 kilometers of pipelines planned for 2026 will help tackle these issues, but more work lies ahead.

Experts stress that Ulaanbaatar’s infrastructure needs constant investment to keep up with urban growth and climate change. As the city continues to expand, reliable drainage systems will become even more critical. Proper drainage not only ensures safety but also protects property and the environment.

Looking ahead, officials expect the new pipelines to significantly reduce flood risks. They aim to decrease the number of flood-prone areas and improve the city’s overall water management. These improvements will also help Ulaanbaatar better handle extreme weather events.

In conclusion, the expansion of rainwater drainage pipelines represents a key step forward for Ulaanbaatar. Installing 30 kilometers of new pipelines will reduce flooding and enhance the city’s ability to respond to climate change.
