Rigoletto Opera Returns to Taichung Stage

Date:

Rigoletto opera returns to Taichung, offering audiences a thrilling and unforgettable theatrical experience. Moreover, the National Taichung Theater will host four performances with Italian-language singing, accompanied by Mandarin and English subtitles. This production combines dramatic intensity with visually striking design, making it a cultural highlight.

The opera, inspired by Victor Hugo’s play Le Roi s’Amuse, follows a jester, his daughter, and a morally complex duke. As the story unfolds, jealousy, fate, and human desire drive mockery and vengeance toward tragedy. Furthermore, the National Taichung Theater emphasizes detailed staging to make every performance feel realistic and immersive.

Revival Director Warwick Doddrell explained that every movement on stage is intentional, guiding audiences through the story. Meanwhile, designer Michael Yeargan created a rotating set resembling a dollhouse. Consequently, the set shifts between the Duke’s lavish world and the jester’s harsh reality, heightening emotional impact.

The title role of Rigoletto will be shared by baritones Jose Carbo and Chen Han-wei. Carbo noted the physical challenges of performing with a humpback and walking sticks. In addition, Chen said expressing emotional depth while managing physical demands is extremely challenging.

Meanwhile, Gilda, the jester’s daughter, will be portrayed by Stacey Alleaume and Miyachi Ena. Alleaume described Gilda as navigating life under high stakes, trying to protect herself while exploring personal freedom. Similarly, Miyachi emphasized Gilda’s growth from innocence to a determined young woman asserting her choices.

The Duke of Mantua, played by Rosario La Spina and Huang Ya-chung, represents charm mixed with manipulation. La Spina observed that audiences may dislike the Duke’s actions yet admire his charisma and layered personality. Therefore, the production highlights moral ambiguity at its core.

This revival is based on Opera Australia’s 1991 staging, performed over 30 years with multiple revivals. However, the story now takes place in 1950s Italy, juxtaposing criminal underworld corruption with high-society excess. Consequently, the updated setting offers fresh perspectives while preserving timeless themes of power and betrayal.

Rigoletto opera in Taichung demonstrates Verdi’s enduring appeal. Moreover, audiences can expect visually impressive and emotionally charged performances. Going forward, similar productions may explore innovative settings, reinforcing the opera’s relevance for modern viewers.

Finally, the National Taichung Theater strengthens Taiwan’s cultural landscape by showcasing world-class performance arts. In addition, this revival attracts attention to both local talent and international opera standards.
