Roh Jae-heon Appointed China Ambassador

Date:

Roh Jae-heon, 60, the eldest son of former South Korean president Roh Tae-woo, has been appointed as the first Chinese ambassador under the Lee Jae-myung government. His appointment reflects his extensive experience and deep knowledge of China.

The government has already begun the steps to confirm the appointment. Furthermore, Roh Jae-heon recently visited China with a presidential special envoy delegation, led by former National Assembly speaker Park Byeong-seug. During this visit, he strengthened his understanding of diplomatic processes and also built connections for future cooperation.

Observers noted that Roh Jae-heon’s long-standing efforts to promote Korea-China exchanges likely influenced the decision. For example, through the East Asia Culture Foundation, established in 2012, he advanced cultural exchange projects between South Korea and China. In addition, in 2016, he served as an adviser to Chengdu City’s international advisory group in China.

Moreover, in 2021, Roh Jae-heon chaired the sociocultural subcommittee of the Korea-China Future Relations Development Committee. These roles demonstrated his commitment to bilateral ties. They also highlighted his ability to bridge cultural and diplomatic initiatives.

Analysts highlighted that his father, former president Roh Tae-woo, played a key role in establishing South Korea-China relations in 1992 through the ‘Northern Policy.’ Moreover, combined with Roh Jae-heon’s contributions, this context reinforced his suitability for the ambassadorial position. It also emphasized the continuity of diplomatic expertise within the family.

On August 19, Chinese Ambassador Dai Bing visited the grave of former president Roh Tae-woo in Paju, accompanied by Roh Jae-heon. This visit symbolized ongoing diplomatic connection and mutual respect between the two countries.

In addition, a ruling Democratic Party official noted that the government likely viewed Roh Jae-heon as a capable figure to improve bilateral relations. The official also emphasized his expertise on China, developed over decades beyond the public eye.

Ultimately, Roh Jae-heon’s appointment aims to strengthen South Korea-China relations in diplomacy, culture, and economic cooperation. His experience, historical ties, and personal dedication position him to manage this important ambassadorial role.

Finally, Roh Jae-heon now faces the task of navigating complex bilateral relations. He must foster mutual understanding and further strengthen the partnership between South Korea and China.
