DUI Fatal Crash in Seoul Kills Japanese Tourist

Date:

A DUI fatal crash in downtown Seoul on Sunday claimed the life of a Japanese mother and injured her daughter. Authorities arrested the driver, a man in his 30s surnamed Seo, and issued a detention warrant amid concerns he might flee. The victims were visiting South Korea for a short trip when the tragedy occurred, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety and drunk driving.

The incident took place near Dongdaemun Station as the victims were heading to Naksan Park. The mother, in her 50s, died at the scene, while her daughter sustained injuries and required medical attention. Emergency responders arrived promptly, and police immediately began investigating the crash and related circumstances.

The suspect was driving an electric vehicle and was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the accident. Following his arrest, he appeared at the Seoul Central District Court with his hands tied. When asked by reporters if he had any message for the victim’s family, he said, “I’m sorry.”

Authorities emphasized that Seo’s arrest and detention aim to prevent him from leaving the country. The court cited the risk of flight as the primary reason for issuing the warrant. Police continue to investigate the driver’s actions, vehicle speed, and other factors that may have contributed to the DUI fatal crash.

Officials also noted that traffic safety remains a priority, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity. The crash underscores the dangers of driving under the influence and the impact on both residents and international visitors. Experts suggest that stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns could help reduce similar incidents.

This DUI fatal crash has drawn attention from local authorities, foreign embassies, and civil society organizations advocating for safer roads. While the case proceeds through the legal system, police plan to review surveillance footage and witness testimonies to establish a full timeline of the event.

The incident has also sparked discussions about EV regulations, road signage, and pedestrian safety measures in central Seoul. Officials aim to implement additional preventive measures to avoid repeat tragedies.

Overall, the DUI fatal crash highlights the ongoing risks of impaired driving in urban centers and the urgent need for comprehensive safety policies. The police investigation is expected to continue, with authorities promising transparency and accountability throughout the legal process.
