Taiwan’s China Motor plans to invest nearly NT$4 billion in a smart EV manufacturing center in Taoyuan’s Yangmei District. This new facility aims to enhance the company’s smart EV manufacturing capabilities, particularly in electric vehicle research, development, and performance testing. The initiative marks a significant step in expanding Taiwan’s domestic automotive industry and promoting green technologies.
The new center will be located near China Motor’s existing Yangmei plant, which currently handles body panel shaping, metalwork, painting, and final assembly. The expanded facility will incorporate advanced green technologies, including solar power installations, energy storage systems, and AI-powered inspection systems. These efforts demonstrate China Motor’s commitment to sustainability and smart EV manufacturing.
China Motor aims to integrate Taiwan’s domestic automotive supply chain through this investment. Additionally, the company plans to accelerate its corporate transformation with a strong focus on environmental responsibility. The company has set ambitious targets to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In the near term, it intends to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. The company expects renewable energy to supply 25% of its electricity consumption by that year.
Looking further ahead, China Motor plans to cut emissions by 50% by 2040 and increase renewable energy use to 55%. The company also intends to install over 10,000 kilowatts of solar power capacity across its Taoyuan and Hsinchu facilities by 2030, reinforcing its smart EV manufacturing ambitions.
This year, China Motor introduced Taiwan’s first fully electric 3.5-tonne truck, the ET35. The vehicle features a self-developed intelligent driving assistance system and uses over 90% locally sourced components, including its motor and battery. China Motor developed the truck’s chassis power system in partnership with the Industrial Technology Research Institute.
The ET35 offers a driving range of 303 kilometers and supports fast charging, reaching full capacity in 35 minutes. The company designed the truck for various applications, including recycling, mobile food services, and vending. They showcased it at E-Mobility Taiwan in April and plan to launch it commercially in the second half of this year.Overall, China Motor’s new smart EV manufacturing center and recent product developments highlight Taiwan’s growing role in sustainable automotive innovation. The company’s efforts reflect broader industry trends toward greener, more intelligent vehicle production.
