LS Cable & System has completed building Asia’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable facility in South Korea. This new plant in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, strengthens the country’s role in supplying advanced subsea cables for global renewable energy projects. Moreover, it highlights South Korea’s growing leadership in energy infrastructure development.
The upgraded HVDC cable facility includes a vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) line. As a result, the company can now produce ultra-long, high-voltage cables with enhanced insulation and greater reliability. Furthermore, LS Cable & System has quadrupled its production capacity, ensuring it can meet rising international demand for energy transmission solutions.
Experts predict that the global HVDC cable market will grow to KRW 40 trillion by 2030. Consequently, LS Cable & System plans to work closely with LS Marine Solution on large-scale initiatives. One such project is the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway, designed to deliver 20 GW of offshore wind energy to industrial hubs by 2040. Construction could begin as early as 2030.
To prepare for such large projects, LS Marine Solution is investing KRW 345.8 billion in a new cable laying vessel (CLV). This advanced ship, currently under construction at Türkiye’s Tersan Shipyard, will carry 13,000 tonnes and handle continuous cable installation over long distances. Thus, it will provide essential support for projects like the West Coast HVDC Energy Highway.
Importantly, this CLV is the only domestic option capable of managing such complex offshore operations. The investment underscores LS Marine Solution’s strategy to strengthen its technological capacity while supporting South Korea’s renewable energy ambitions. Additionally, the vessel’s capabilities will ensure faster and more efficient installations in demanding marine environments.
LS Cable & System has also secured a contract to supply cables for the 532 MW Anma offshore wind project. This agreement further emphasizes the company’s growing presence in renewable energy markets. As a result, LS Cable & System continues to expand its influence in South Korea’s offshore wind initiatives and global clean energy networks.
The completion of Asia’s largest HVDC cable facility represents a significant achievement for South Korea’s energy sector. With enhanced production capabilities and cutting-edge technology, LS Cable & System is now poised to lead the global subsea cable industry. In addition, these developments align with the nation’s long-term vision to become a hub for renewable energy technology exports.
By focusing on innovation and strategic partnerships, LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution are setting new standards for energy transmission. Together, they ensure South Korea remains a critical player in the worldwide shift to sustainable energy solutions.
