South Korea and Germany strengthened discussions on offshore wind energy cooperation at the Korean-German Business Forum. Experts shared strategies to expand renewable energy projects and enhance regional sustainability. The forum highlighted best practices for offshore wind development and cross-border collaboration.
Held under the theme “Offshore Wind Special Act and Beyond,” the event focused on economic feasibility, grid connections, and regulatory frameworks. Participants explored how coordinated planning can accelerate project implementation and reduce risks.
Norman Ruhnke, policy officer at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, praised Berlin’s centralized planning model. He said it allows better synchronization of offshore wind park development and offshore grid installations. However, Ruhnke added that central site pre-selection minimizes project risks and enhances investor confidence.
On a panel about Korea’s Offshore Wind Special Act, David Jones, country manager at RWE Renewables Korea, emphasized global knowledge-sharing. He said strong government commitment, clear market frameworks, competitive auctions, and streamlined permitting are essential. Jones added that these measures unlock sector potential, boost investor confidence, and create faster business opportunities.
The forum was co-hosted by the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the German Embassy in Seoul, and think tank adelphi. Companies like RWE Renewables and other stakeholders attended, discussing practical steps for renewable energy growth.
South Korea aims to accelerate offshore wind projects while learning from Germany’s experience.
