Global Responsibility Leadership Shapes South Korea’s Role at G20 Summit

Date:

South Korea advanced its message of global responsibility leadership at the G20 summit in Johannesburg on Saturday. President Lee Jae Myung emphasized that South Korea will take a more proactive role in global problem solving.

The two day summit focused on solidarity, equality and sustainability, and it gathered major economic leaders worldwide. However, United States President Donald Trump did not participate in this year’s discussions.

Lee joined three official sessions and presented South Korea’s roadmap for building inclusive global growth. Moreover, he stressed that fiscal reforms must reduce financial burdens on developing countries. Officials explained that these measures clearly align with the principle of global responsibility leadership in economic cooperation.

During the second session, Lee highlighted the need for coordinated climate action among all nations. Furthermore, he urged leaders to prioritize food security and boost joint disaster response systems. The presidential office confirmed that South Korea will expand climate financing programs for highly vulnerable regions.

Advisers also noted that humanitarian disaster relief remains essential for long term development partnerships. They added that progress will continue only when countries maintain consistent dialogue and provide technology based support.

The G20 represents 85 percent of the global economy and two thirds of the global population. Consequently, South Korea believes global responsibility leadership must remain central to every summit agenda.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Lee held talks with leaders from the MIKTA coalition. Additionally, their discussions explored deeper cooperation on economic policy, emerging technology and regional security initiatives.

Lee also met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Together, they discussed expanding climate technology collaboration and strengthening bilateral trade frameworks.

On Sunday, Lee will attend the closing G20 session and later meet Korean residents in South Africa. Afterward, he will continue his diplomatic tour with a visit to Turkey on Monday.

Government officials said the summit further strengthened South Korea’s international standing among major economies. Therefore, they expect South Korea to shape future negotiations on fair economic development and climate cooperation.
