South Korea’s Hanwha Group strengthens its US shipbuilding presence through a new partnership with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The collaboration focuses on cleaner propulsion technology and cybersecurity solutions that meet US rules.
Hanwha Power Systems secured Approval in Principle from ABS for an ammonia-fueled gas turbine. The design fits a 174,000 twenty-foot equivalent LNG carrier. The approval confirmed the design’s technical feasibility and created a path for a viable ammonia propulsion system. Ammonia emits far less carbon dioxide than traditional fuels, making the project an eco-friendly breakthrough.
Hanwha also expanded cooperation with ABS through a separate agreement. Affiliates Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Systems joined the deal. Together, they will research cybersecurity solutions for ships. The goal is to build systems that follow strict US rules while creating new global standards.
A Hanwha spokesperson said these technologies will primarily support vessels built in the United States. However, Hanwha and ABS also plan to promote them worldwide. The ambition highlights Hanwha’s focus on long-term shipbuilding innovation.
Hanwha already operates Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania. The group purchased it for $100 million. Hanwha is also exploring new acquisitions to increase its role in US shipbuilding. With these moves, the company aims to support Washington’s push for stronger local capacity.
ABS approval is not a legal requirement for building ships in the US. However, many lenders and government bodies rely on ABS certification. They often require it before offering loans or approvals. Hanwha’s work with ABS therefore boosts its credibility and competitiveness in the US market.
The partnership shows Hanwha’s strategy of mixing advanced technology with international cooperation. By focusing on clean fuels and secure systems, the company proves its intent to lead global shipbuilding.
South Korea’s Hanwha is now positioned as a major force in US shipbuilding. The group combines cleaner technology with higher security standards, showing a clear path for future growth.
