South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung vowed to strengthen regional growth, aiming to boost development across the entire country. He said supporting provinces and reducing congestion in Seoul is essential for long-term progress.
Lee made the remarks while presiding over his first Cabinet meeting at the government complex in Sejong, south of Seoul. He emphasized that regional growth is critical for the country’s sustainable future.
“For sustainable development, every region must share opportunities equally,” Lee said. He warned that concentrating resources in Seoul could deepen inequality and harm provinces.
Lee pledged tailored strategies to foster strategic industries in provincial areas. These measures will advance regional growth and reduce the overconcentration of population and resources in the capital region.
“The limits of capital concentration are clear,” he explained. “If we continue this way, Seoul will overflow while provinces wither, making growth unsustainable.”
The president vowed to accelerate the five hubs and three special zones strategy. The plan envisions five regional growth centers, including Seoul and four other hubs, along with three autonomous provinces: Gangwon, North Jeolla, and Jeju.
Lee added that the presidential office will establish a branch in Sejong alongside the main headquarters in Seoul. He called the new branch the cornerstone of administrative and economic development supporting regional growth.
The government also plans to construct the Sejong presidential office and National Assembly building without delay. Lee emphasized that this initiative will serve as a major step toward balanced regional growth.
Analysts noted that South Korea’s growth initiatives could ease urban overcrowding, boost provincial economies, and create jobs nationwide. Experts also said a clear implementation strategy is essential for success.
Lee stressed that the government will provide incentives for businesses to invest in provincial hubs. These incentives will foster innovation, new industries, and stronger local economies.
