Space Battery Technology Boosted by LG Energy Solution Partnership

Date:

LG Energy Solution is expanding its focus on space battery technology through a new partnership with U.S.-based South 8 Technologies. Together, the companies aim to develop advanced aerospace batteries that can operate reliably in extremely cold environments. This partnership represents a significant step in LG’s plan to move beyond Earth-based products and enter the space innovation market.

The strategic agreement focuses on developing lithium-ion battery cells specifically for outer space. Moreover, the partnership combines LG Energy Solution’s expertise in cell design with South 8 Technologies’ patented LiGas electrolyte technology. Announced Wednesday, the collaboration demonstrates LG’s growing ambition to lead in advanced, high-performance energy systems worldwide.

South 8 Technologies gained global recognition for creating the world’s first liquefied gas electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. This breakthrough allows stable operation even at minus 60 degrees Celsius, far below the limits of conventional systems. Furthermore, the gas-based electrolyte enhances safety by venting pressure safely when damaged, thereby reducing the risk of fire.

Under this agreement, LG Energy Solution will handle the design, testing, and performance evaluation of the new battery cells. Meanwhile, South 8 Technologies will oversee manufacturing using its liquefied gas electrolyte and specialized filling process. Once completed, these battery cells will integrate into KULR Technology Group’s aerospace platform to ensure consistent performance in harsh space conditions.

In addition, the partnership forms part of a larger initiative involving KULR Technology Group and NASA. Together, these organizations are developing ultra-cold battery systems that can power next-generation deep-space missions. Consequently, LG Energy Solution’s involvement reinforces its long-term investment in pioneering technologies for scientific and commercial space exploration.

Kim Je-young, Chief Technology Officer at LG Energy Solution, stated that space battery technology can effectively solve energy challenges in freezing environments. He explained that liquefied gas electrolytes maintain strong performance where traditional systems fail. Moreover, Kim emphasized that the innovation could also benefit defense, aviation, and advanced research industries.

LG Energy Solution began collaborating with South 8 Technologies last year through a joint development agreement. Since then, both companies have worked closely to refine the liquefied gas electrolyte for scalable industrial use. As a result, the partnership is now advancing from laboratory research toward real-world application in aerospace systems.

Global demand for space battery technology continues to grow as organizations invest more in off-Earth energy solutions. Reliable and safe power systems are increasingly vital for satellites, lunar missions, and future space exploration. Therefore, LG Energy Solution’s continued innovation may help shape the next generation of energy systems for space missions.

Ultimately, this collaboration strengthens LG Energy Solution’s reputation as a leader in advanced battery research and development. Through continuous innovation, strategic partnerships, and technological progress, the company aims to expand its influence far beyond Earth and contribute to humanity’s exploration of space.
