Tainan Turns Pineapple Waste into Clothing

Date:

Tainan’s Guanmiao District is making waves by turning pineapple waste into clothing. This pineapple waste innovation not only benefits the environment but also helps farmers lower their expenses.

The local government teamed up with Cava Co. Ltd. to launch this innovative program. They revealed the project at the Guanmiao produce market on Monday. Pineapple leaves, stems, and mulch now have new uses instead of becoming waste.

Mayor Huang Wei-che highlighted that pineapples play a vital role in Tainan’s agriculture. However, pineapple waste like roots, leaves, and plastic mulch used to cause many problems. For example, farmers had to deal with environmental damage and high disposal costs.

Traditionally, farmers plowed leftover pineapple waste into the soil. Unfortunately, this method caused slow decomposition. Consequently, farmers needed to use fungicides and leave their fields fallow for up to 180 days. Moreover, plastic mulch worsened soil quality and raised labor costs.

Thanks to the pineapple waste innovation, the process has changed significantly. The new mechanized recycling system removes the need for harmful chemicals. It also shortens the fallow period from months to just one week. As a result, farmers can plant crops year-round and react faster to market demands.

Farmers now collect and sort pineapple waste carefully. Then, they process it into fibers and enzyme-rich products. This approach reduces disposal costs and supports a circular production system.

Specifically, pineapple leaves are spun into natural textile fibers suitable for clothing. Meanwhile, stems become animal feed additives. These additives help livestock digest food better and improve their health.

Last year, Cava tested the program by recycling waste from 15 hectares of pineapple farms. They created feed, enzymes, cat litter, and fabric for apparel and floor mats. Encouraged by these results, the company plans to expand to 80 hectares by 2026.

Ultimately, this pineapple waste innovation promises to cover more pineapple-growing areas in Tainan. It also offers a sustainable solution that benefits farmers, the environment, and local communities.

This project shows how creative recycling can transform agricultural waste into valuable products. Therefore, Tainan sets an example for other regions to follow.
