Driving Permit Recognition Restored Between Taiwan and Austria

Date:

Driving permit recognition between Taiwan and Austria has officially resumed, offering convenience for travelers and strengthening bilateral relations. The change allows Taiwan-issued international driving permit holders to drive legally in Austria.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) confirmed on Friday that Austria’s transport ministry updated its regulations to accept Taiwan-issued permits. MOFA and its representative office in Austria engaged in ongoing talks to achieve this result.

MOFA spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei said travelers can present both a Taiwan-issued international driving permit and their Taiwan driver’s license to drive freely in Austria. He described the decision as a key breakthrough after months of negotiations.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung welcomed the development, saying the government will also restore recognition for Austrian-issued permits in Taiwan. He added that the move will enhance tourism and business ties while promoting stronger people-to-people exchanges.

The restored driving permit recognition is expected to encourage travel and economic activity between Taiwan and Austria. Easier mobility will support bilateral engagement and cultural exchange.

The issue began in May last year when Austria stopped accepting Taiwan-issued IDPs. Taiwanese travelers faced difficulties using their permits, creating inconvenience for tourists and business visitors.

In response, Taiwan temporarily suspended recognition of Austrian-issued permits. Both governments continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the problem efficiently.

With the new policy, driving permit recognition now facilitates smooth travel and strengthens trust between the two nations. MOFA emphasized that the measure reflects mutual respect and practical cooperation.

Officials said the governments will finalize reciprocal implementation soon. This restoration signals a milestone in bilateral relations and highlights the importance of ongoing diplomatic dialogue.

Driving permit recognition between Taiwan and Austria now enables hassle-free travel, supports international ties, and demonstrates the benefits of sustained cooperation.
