Taiwan Defense Sparks Criticism From Mainland

Date:

Taiwan defense has become a central issue after regional leader Lai Ching-te announced plans to strengthen the island’s military. Mainland authorities warned that high defense spending could harm the well-being of Taiwan residents. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, addressed the issue Wednesday.

Chen criticized Lai for acting as a “cash machine” for foreign forces. He said rushing arms expansion will not guarantee security or peace. Instead, it risks the prosperity and safety of Taiwan residents. Chen noted that the planned defense budget will exceed 3 percent of GDP next year and could surpass 5 percent by 2030.

Furthermore, Chen said Lai’s claim of “reciprocal dignity” contradicts the one-China principle. He stressed this rhetoric seeks dialogue without recognizing historical and legal facts. As a result, it blocks meaningful communication and cooperation.

Chen also condemned the authorities for “recklessly squandering” Taiwan’s resources on foreign arms. He said this approach fails to provide security and burdens future generations. Increasing payments to external powers could compromise the island’s stability. Chen said Taiwan gains peace and dignity by rejecting separatism and following the one-China principle.

He added that militarized Taiwan defense measures cannot replace strategic dialogue or cooperation. Instead, they increase tensions, create uncertainty, and weaken cross-Straits exchanges. Chen warned that pursuing independence through military means is futile and harmful to the population.

In summary, Taiwan defense policies focused on arms expansion and foreign dependence threaten peace and prosperity. Mainland authorities urge returning to constructive engagement. They emphasize dialogue under the one-China principle to safeguard the security and well-being of all Taiwan residents
