Disaster Relief Package Taiwan Aid

Date:

Taiwan’s Executive Yuan announced a Disaster Relief Package today, allocating at least NT$20 billion to assist areas hit by summer storms. The package covers damage from Typhoon Danas and Super Typhoon Ragasa, including flooding and a barrier lake collapse in Hualien.

Premier Cho Jung-tai led the Cabinet meeting, observing a moment of silence for the victims. He expressed condolences to affected families and emphasized ongoing rescue and restoration work. The plan includes multiple phases focused on saving lives, clearing debris, restoring transportation, and aiding reconstruction.

The confirmed death toll from Ragasa remains 18, with six people missing and 139 injured nationwide, according to the Central Emergency Operations Center. Families of those killed will receive NT$1 million, while seriously injured individuals will get NT$250,000.

Additionally, recovery aid of NT$50,000 to NT$100,000 per household will be provided. A further NT$50,000 subsidy will help remove mud and debris. Authorities announced that Taiwan Power Co and Taiwan Water Corp will waive electricity and water bills for the last two months.

The government also plans rent subsidies, temporary lodging, agricultural disaster relief, and support for affected businesses. Health services include medical treatment and prescription refills without an insurance card, a three-month copayment waiver, and six months of waived health premiums.

A total of 25 relief measures, with a budget of NT$2.5 billion, target disaster victims, indigenous communities, farmers, and businesses. Public Construction Commission Chairman Derek Chen will lead a cross-departmental team to set up a one-stop service platform in the worst-hit areas next Tuesday. This platform will handle applications, provide consultations, and promote the relief measures.

Cho urged Legislative Yuan caucuses to approve the package quickly. The Cabinet approved a draft special act on August 7. The legislature passed it on August 15, raising the budget from NT$56 billion to NT$60 billion. The full special budget bill passed on August 29.

The Disaster Relief Package aims to speed recovery, ensure social stability, and help affected communities rebuild efficiently. Officials highlighted that timely action is essential to reduce further economic and social impacts.
