Taiwan Participation Faces China’s Scrutiny

Date:

Taiwan participation in international organizations has drawn renewed attention after reports of US lawmakers urging ICAO to invite the region. Mainland authorities stressed that Taiwan’s involvement must follow the one-China principle. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed the issue on Wednesday.

Chen stated that the mainland’s position on Taiwan participation in global organizations, including ICAO, remains consistent and clear. He emphasized that all matters must be handled according to the one-China principle.

Furthermore, Chen urged the US to respect this principle and abide by the three China-US joint communiques. He stressed that the US should act with restraint regarding Taiwan and avoid sending signals that encourage “Taiwan independence.”

Chen criticized the Democratic Progressive Party authorities for attempting to gain influence through foreign support. He warned that these efforts are bound to fail. The spokesperson emphasized that Taiwan participation cannot bypass legal and historical frameworks recognizing one China.

He added that international cooperation is only legitimate when the one-China principle is respected. Attempts to use participation for political purposes undermine stability and trust. Mainland authorities insist that Taiwan’s role in global organizations must align with international norms while upholding China’s sovereignty.

Moreover, Chen noted that efforts to push Taiwan into international bodies without authorization violate international law and harm cross-Straits relations. He urged all parties to engage constructively by following agreed-upon principles rather than pursuing unilateral actions.

In summary, Taiwan participation in international forums must respect the one-China principle. Mainland authorities oppose any attempts to promote separatism and stress the importance of stability, cooperation, and legal compliance. Participation should support dialogue and peaceful exchanges, not political manipulation.
