Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued a stark warning about Taiwan security risks during a major defense forum in Taipei. He argued that Taiwan’s fall to China would disrupt global stability and regional peace.
Speaking at the Taipei Security Dialogue, Morrison emphasized the global implications of Taiwan’s security. According to him, Taiwan security risks affect not only the Indo-Pacific but also the broader international order. Therefore, he urged democratic nations to remain vigilant and proactive.
Morrison said the threat from China extends far beyond the military. In fact, it includes energy security, economic pressure, and strategic infrastructure. He explained that Beijing’s ambitions challenge the rules-based global system.
During his speech, Morrison drew comparisons between Taiwan and West Berlin during the Cold War. Similarly, he said Taiwan’s resilience must become part of its defense. He noted that public diplomacy can shape international perceptions and strengthen deterrence.
Furthermore, Morrison outlined the strategic consequences of a Chinese takeover. He warned that the People’s Liberation Army could install air bases in Taiwan and deploy long-range missiles. As a result, China would extend its reach to the second island chain.
This expansion, he argued, would force neighboring countries to operate under China’s sphere of influence. Consequently, the regional balance would shift, and free navigation would come under threat.
Throughout his address, Morrison emphasized that Taiwan must act quickly. He called for deeper ties with the US, Japan, and Australia. In addition, he recommended expanding local defense manufacturing and hardening critical infrastructure.
