Taiwan Shapes Its Own Future Amid Rising Challenges

Date:

Taiwan’s Vice President, Hsiao Bi-khim, reaffirmed the island’s determination to shape its own future during a recent speech in Taipei. Speaking at the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hsiao highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to peace, stability, and democratic values. She said Taiwan shapes its own future by defending the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Hsiao described the increasing pressure Taiwan faces from China, including military threats and economic tactics designed to intimidate. Despite these challenges, the government remains firm in its resolve to protect democracy. She explained that Taiwan shapes its own future through resilience and innovation.

On national defense, Hsiao detailed ongoing efforts like the Han Kuang 41 military exercises. The government focuses on modernizing its forces and advancing asymmetric warfare strategies. Furthermore, civilian preparedness plays a crucial role in Taiwan’s defense plan. Hsiao emphasized that deterrence relies not only on weapons but also on the people’s strength. She also addressed threats beyond traditional warfare. Cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and supply chain disruptions pose serious risks. Taiwan responds with a “whole-of-society” approach that integrates national security and disaster readiness.

Regarding relations with China, Hsiao stressed that Taiwan does not seek conflict nor provoke it. She advocated for dialogue based on equality and mutual respect. At the same time, she condemned China’s recent psychological warfare and infiltration attempts, which aim to divide Taiwanese society. Economically, Taiwan pushes to strengthen trade ties. Hsiao revealed that Taiwan’s trade team works tirelessly to finalize a reciprocal tariff deal with the United States. Moreover, partnerships with Europe, Canada, and the UK are expanding in green technology, semiconductors, and satellite projects.

Finally, Hsiao pointed out Taiwan’s focus on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and net-zero environmental goals. She stated that Taiwan shapes its own future by driving innovation, advancing diplomacy, and leading through democratic values. In sum, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim conveyed a clear message: Taiwan shapes its own future despite external pressures, embracing peace, resilience, and forward-looking policies.
