The Tamsui Beach Clean-Up is making its return this summer, bringing locals and tourists together once again. Thanks to improved public transport, the event is now more accessible than ever. Shalun Beach, the event’s location, sits along Taiwan’s scenic northern coast. It features wide sandy stretches, perfect for soccer, volleyball, or sunbathing. Moreover, the newly extended light rail line makes travel from Taipei fast and simple.
Each year, volunteers work hard to keep the beach clean and welcoming. This summer, Havana, Redpoint Brewing, and Beautiful Moon Cafe will organize the event. Not only do they provide structure, but they also encourage everyone to join the effort. Participants should bring gloves, tongs, and trash bags. These tools help speed up the clean-up process. More importantly, they allow people to safely handle waste scattered along the beach.
Furthermore, the organizers believe a clean coastline shows respect for nature. They hope this event inspires others to care for their environment as well. Local resident Gary O’Connor joins each year. He says trash always finds its way back, so these clean-ups are necessary. Despite the hard work, he enjoys the company and the reward afterward. To get there, take the MRT to Hongshulin Station, then transfer to the light rail and exit at Shanlun Station. From there, follow signs toward the Luye Equestrian Center. Alternatively, take a taxi from Tamsui MRT Station to Beautiful Moon Cafe on Danhai Road. The cafe offers restrooms and meals for tired volunteers.
