China has introduced the Tongji research vessel, its first ocean-level intelligent scientific ship. This new vessel significantly boosts the country’s marine research capabilities. Built for Shanghai’s Tongji University, the Tongji research vessel will serve as a leading platform for scientific exploration in the East China Sea.
The vessel’s construction began in April 2024 at China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company. By May, Tongji completed successful sea trials. Consequently, the company officially delivered the ship in Shanghai on Sunday.
Tongji will support various activities, including scientific research voyages, offshore engineering tasks, and student internships. Moreover, the vessel will enhance hands-on learning for marine students at Tongji University and other departments. Additionally, it provides vital equipment for cutting-edge marine science projects.
Chief designer Li Zhenghua described Tongji as a multi-functional “maritime campus.” It combines scientific investigation, talent development, education, and cultural preservation. The ship covers marine geology, chemistry, biology, and other research fields.
Measuring 81.5 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 6.9 meters deep, the vessel can accommodate 45 people, including 30 scientists. Tongji can reach speeds up to 15 knots, roughly 27 kilometers per hour. It also boasts a range of 80,000 nautical miles and can operate independently for up to 35 days.
Tongji’s design maximizes usable space. Specifically, the deck offers 460 square meters for operations, while the laboratory spans 320 square meters. Furthermore, each occupant enjoys a personal living cabin of 10.2 square meters. The ship also features over 100 square meters of functional rooms, including conference halls, lecture spaces, and fitness areas.
This intelligent vessel uses a fully domestic electric propulsion system. It navigates all waters except ice-covered areas. Notably, Tongji earned the i-ship intelligent certification from the China Classification Society. This certification covers remote shore control, autonomous open-water navigation, intelligent energy management, and integrated digital platforms.
Equipped with advanced laboratories and all-weather operational capability, the Tongji research vessel ranks among the world’s top scientific research ships. According to Li Zhenghua, its performance and technology have reached leading global standards.
In summary, the Tongji research vessel is a game-changer for China’s marine science. It combines intelligent design, cutting-edge tech, and extensive research facilities. Therefore, this new ocean-level platform will drive future discoveries and training in marine science.
