Traditional Chinese Medicine Gains Popularity Among Youth in China

Date:

Traditional Chinese medicine is increasingly attracting young adults who seek wellness, stress relief, and cultural connection. At a culture and tourism event in Jinan, the hometown of ancient medical pioneer Bian Que, interest in traditional Chinese medicine remedies and lifestyle practices was highly visible.

Students from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese medicine practices actively showcased self-made products. They included herbal teas, incense, and TCM-based shampoo bars. Meanwhile, Yang Jiashuo displayed a bead bracelet infused with rose, astragalus, and mint. He said it helps relieve emotions. Similarly, his classmate Li Jiahui promoted a shampoo bar designed to strengthen hair affected by late nights and stress, reflecting how ancient Chinese healing methods can support modern wellness.

These young innovators belong to a university club focused on developing and marketing herbal products. Consequently, their work reflects a broader trend among “crispy youth,” a social media term for young adults facing physical or mental strain. In addition, Li noted that a herbal ointment they developed sold hundreds of jars. This demonstrates strong demand for practical solutions rooted in traditional Chinese medicine.

The event also highlighted youth-focused night school programs. Ji Yanyan, deputy secretary of the Changqing District Communist Youth League Committee, explained that the “Bian Que Night Talks” initiative offers 24 themed courses. As a result, over 210 participants learned to blend herbal teas, practice stress-reducing breathing techniques, and use TCM massage for fatigue relief, demonstrating how ancient Chinese healing methods are applied in everyday life.

Participants reported tangible benefits. Li Ting, a 29-year-old interior designer, said the emotional regulation courses helped her manage anxiety using tea blends and breathing exercises. Similarly, Shan Zifeng, director of the night school, emphasized the program’s importance. Over 20 TCM experts taught sessions on sleep, weight management, and stress reduction, further promoting ancient Chinese healing methods.

Moreover, Jinan has leveraged its rich traditional Chinese medicine heritage to integrate culture, health services, and products into daily life. In addition, the event, running until Oct. 7, included health food competitions and cultural performances. These activities blended ancient wisdom with modern youth interests, highlighting the ongoing appeal of traditional Chinese medicine.

Finally, experts noted that initiatives like this foster cultural appreciation and support personal well-being. By linking ancient Chinese healing methods with modern lifestyles, these programs engage younger generations. Moreover, they reinforce TCM’s long-term relevance and help preserve traditional knowledge for the future.
