Treasure Hunt Scam Exposed in China Park Incident

Date:

Treasure hunt scam drove a group of nearly 20 people to stage a midnight operation in southern China. A man surnamed Zhang led the gang after believing false rumors about hidden treasures. Therefore, to carry out the plan, the group disguised themselves as security officials.

At midnight, several individuals wearing camouflage uniforms entered a city park. Their uniforms carried the words “On Duty.” Next, they stormed the park’s security office and claimed to be national security officers. Then they detained guards, seized phones, and announced they would control the area until morning.

During this time, four vehicles entered the park carrying tools. The group dug into the ground until 2 a.m. However, despite their efforts, they found nothing valuable. Eventually, they left, leaving behind damaged facilities and dug-up soil.

Once released, park guards discovered the destruction. Immediately, they reported the incident through the 12339 national security hotline. Soon after, officials responded quickly by launching an investigation with support from multiple agencies. They identified Zhang as the leader and summoned all those involved.

Later, investigators revealed Zhang believed old folk rumors about hidden riches buried in the park. Consequently, his decision to pursue the treasure hunt scam led to the large-scale operation. Authorities confirmed he now awaits legal consequences.

Moreover, this case highlights growing concerns about criminals impersonating state officials. In past cases, impostors used fake identities to gain influence and financial advantage. For example, one man even created a persona of a senior department leader and built a fraud gang. Additionally, others forged documents, fabricated accounts, and misused official logos for scams.

Therefore, officials warn the public to remain cautious when approached by people claiming to represent state security. Real officers always carry identification and credentials. Furthermore, authorities advise citizens to stay calm, observe details, and report suspicious activity.

Finally, the ministry emphasized reporting through hotlines, official websites, and verified accounts. By acting responsibly, citizens can help prevent another treasure hunt scam. In conclusion, the case serves as a reminder that unfounded rumors and impersonation schemes can cause real harm.
