Tropical Storms Francisco and Co-may Hit Taiwan

Date:

Two tropical storms, Francisco and Co-may, are moving near Taiwan and causing unsettled weather. Tropical Storms Francisco and Co-may show a rare interaction called the Fujiwhara effect.

This phenomenon causes the storms to rotate around a common point and influence each other’s paths. As a result, northern and northeastern Taiwan will face heavy rain and gusty winds in the coming days.

By 2 a.m., Tropical Storm Francisco stood 710 kilometers east-southeast of Taipei. It moves northwest to west-northwest at about 20 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Co-may stayed 630 kilometers south-southwest of Eluanbi, traveling east-southeast to northeast at 11 to 14 kilometers per hour.

Meteorologist Daniel Wu predicts that the outer circulation of Francisco, combined with the monsoon, will deliver significant rainfall and strong gusts to northern and northeastern Taiwan on Thursday. Additionally, central and southern Taiwan may experience scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons.

From Friday through Sunday, Tropical Storms Francisco and Co-may, along with the persistent monsoon, will bring rain and gusty winds north of central Taiwan. Southern Taiwan will likely see isolated thunderstorms. The Central Weather Administration expects Tropical Storm Francisco to pass east of Taiwan, entering northern coastal waters, although its structure may weaken.

Tropical Storm Co-may, located northwest of Luzon, will likely turn northeast and weaken as it crosses the island. The monsoon strongly influences the storms’ movements and fuels their Fujiwhara interaction. This interaction causes their paths to become erratic, said Wu.

Meanwhile, a third tropical system is developing north of Guam. Experts expect it to strengthen but likely move northward, so it will not threaten Taiwan. Looking ahead, from Monday to Wednesday, the monsoon will continue destabilizing Taiwan’s atmosphere. This pattern will increase chances of localized showers nationwide.

Strong afternoon convection may trigger lightning, sudden heavy rain, and gusty winds. However, during dry periods, the weather will remain hot and humid. In summary, Tropical Storms Francisco and Co-may will bring several days of wet and windy conditions to Taiwan, especially in northern areas. Residents should stay alert for sudden weather changes and prepare for potential storms.
