UK and Australia Strongly Stress Peace in Taiwan Strait

The UK and Australia emphasized the need for peace in Taiwan Strait during a joint statement released.This message came as both nations expressed deep concern over recent regional tensions. UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy, Defence Secretary John Healey, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong made the statement at the Australia-UK Ministerial Consultations held in Sydney.

During the talks, the ministers urged all parties to resolve cross-strait issues through dialogue and without resorting to force. They strongly opposed any unilateral moves that could change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Both countries highlighted how critical stability in this area remains for global peace and security.

Furthermore, the ministers criticized China’s recent military exercises near Taiwan. They described these actions as “destabilizing” and dangerous to regional peace. The statement also pointed out Taiwan’s valuable contributions to the global community, emphasizing why peace in Taiwan Strait benefits everyone worldwide.

In addition, the UK and Australia reaffirmed their support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. They expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan in trade, science, technology, culture, and economic fields. Both countries made it clear they value Taiwan as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

The joint statement did not stop there. It also condemned aggressive behavior by Chinese military and coast guard vessels in the South China Sea. These actions included sideswiping, water cannoning, and close maneuvers that risked human lives and escalated tensions dangerously. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the statement warmly. Officials said the message reflects the growing international consensus on Taiwan’s importance.

Taiwan’s ministry called the island an “indispensable member” of the global community. They pledged to continue working with democratic partners to uphold a rules-based international order.
