The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Communications of Mongolia has partnered with the Ulaanbaatar City Mayor’s Office to launch a major infrastructure upgrade. This initiative focuses on a pedestrian walkway renovation coupled with significant underground cabling works. The project covers 22.9 kilometers of new manholes and conduits, aligning with pedestrian walkway improvements across the city.
Naranbaatar Naigal, Head of the Performance and Quality Department at “Information Communication Network” LLC, explained the scope. His company oversees seven stations, 9,236 manholes, conduits, and more than 700 kilometers of fiber-optic cables serving 121 enterprises in Ulaanbaatar. Notably, since the 1996 ‘MON-1300’ Project, no expansion has taken place in the city’s manhole and conduit network. Consequently, the company plans to relocate 22.9 kilometers of overhead cables and wires underground.
Specifically, these cables run along Peace Avenue, Chinggis Avenue, and areas near the Great and Small Rings. The new underground system will use four-duct conduits, each 110 centimeters in diameter. This upgrade aims to remove cluttered overhead wiring, thereby improving the city’s appearance and infrastructure reliability. To maximize efficiency, officials coordinate the underground cabling installation closely with the ongoing pedestrian walkway renovation.
On the pedestrian side, Bat-erdene Davaajav, Director of “Chinggisyn Melmii” LLC, shared project details. His company is renovating a 6,354-square-meter walkway and bicycle path on the west side, stretching from the Central Post Office to the APU Company intersection in the 19th khoroolol. Initially, the project used locally sourced stone tiles. However, limited availability led to switching to stone tiles imported from China. Alongside the walkway, workers are building an asphalt-concrete bicycle path and landscaping green areas. Currently, the renovation progress stands at just over 20 percent.
Moreover, First Deputy Governor Davaadalai Tumendalai set a firm deadline for the walkway renovation. The pedestrian walkway renovation around the Central Post Office must finish by September 1, 2025. He stressed that all parties maintain close coordination between walkway and underground cabling works to ensure smooth progress.
In summary, this combined pedestrian walkway renovation and underground cabling expansion project marks a significant step forward. It will improve city infrastructure, enhance urban aesthetics, and provide safer, more functional pedestrian routes. The city expects this work to support its long-term development goals while meeting residents’ needs.
