The advanced water purification plant in Ulaanbaatar is now nearly finished, with construction at 99.5%. Located on the eastern slope of Songinokhairkhan mountain, this facility marks a major improvement in the city’s water infrastructure. Consequently, it will provide safer and cleaner drinking water to residents.
Recently, Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav visited the plant. Alongside him were Mayor Nyambaatar Khishgee and U.S. Ambassador Richas Buangan. Together, they toured the site and praised the impressive progress made so far.
This project is part of the larger “Water Supply Project,” valued at USD 461 million. Importantly, the funding comes from a grant by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) of the United States, combined with investments from Mongolia’s government. As a result, the advanced water purification plant will treat up to 50 million cubic meters of water annually.
It will purify water drawn from the city’s western source, ensuring it meets safe drinking standards. After treatment, the water will enter Ulaanbaatar’s central distribution network. In addition, 27 engineers and technical staff from the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority have completed practical training. They learned equipment installation and plant commissioning skills. On July 31, 2025, this team officially began operating the plant, guaranteeing efficient management.
Moreover, the MCC project supports building new groundwater wells and a modern wastewater treatment plant. It also promotes essential reforms in policies, laws, and regulations. These reforms aim to enhance the long-term sustainability of Ulaanbaatar’s water supply system.
By increasing the water supply by over 80%, this project will enable the city’s westward expansion. Therefore, the improved infrastructure will encourage further economic growth in the capital. The advanced water purification plant remains central to this vital transformation.
Overall, the advanced water purification plant will significantly improve access to clean drinking water. Thus, its completion will benefit residents and support Ulaanbaatar’s future development. In summary, the advanced water purification plant, supported by international and local efforts, will ensure sustainable water supply growth. Consequently, it offers hope for a healthier, more prosperous Ulaanbaatar.
