Weather Preparedness: Mongolia’s PM Calls for Urgent Action

Date:

Mongolia’s Prime Minister, Zandanshatar Gombojav, convened a crucial session of the State Emergency Commission to emphasize the importance of weather preparedness. The meeting aimed to coordinate efforts ahead of the severe wet snow and blizzard conditions forecast to hit large parts of the country soon. The Prime Minister insisted officials concentrate on their duties and avoid political disputes that could undermine readiness.

The session included detailed reports on the country’s preparedness in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and urban infrastructure. The National Agency of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring forecasts wet snow and blizzards impacting northern areas of western, central, and eastern provinces first, with severe weather extending to various regions over several days.

Due to poor hay yields in western provinces, authorities have arranged support from the east to secure animal feed supplies. Out of the targeted 1.5 million tonnes of natural hay, 1.1 million tonnes have been harvested so far, mitigating concerns about livestock care during the harsh winter.

In addition to agriculture, the energy sector shows significant progress. Winter readiness in this sector has reached 87 percent completion. Power plants currently maintain coal reserves totaling 626,900 tonnes and 2,519 tonnes of fuel oil. To ensure urban heating needs, Ulaanbaatar has started distributing semi-coked briquettes at 500 retail points, with plans to import 306,000 tonnes for the upcoming season.

The Prime Minister made a strong point about the ongoing stable supply of fuel and briquettes. He warned that any attempts by enterprises to create artificial shortages would be investigated. Officials responsible for such disruptions risk losing their special permits. He reminded officials of earlier government directives that tasked ministries and agencies with ensuring winter preparedness. The Prime Minister demanded progress reports at the next Cabinet meeting, signaling strict government oversight.

Furthermore, PM Zandanshatar warned that officials who delay or neglect their responsibilities would face accountability measures. His comments underscore the government’s commitment to managing winter risks effectively and safeguarding citizens from weather-related hardships. With the expected severe winter weather, Mongolia’s focus on weather preparedness aims to reduce potential damages and maintain public safety. The government’s clear stance signals increased vigilance and action in the days ahead.
