Yoon Suk Yeol Questioned Over Martial Law Charges

Date:

Former president Yoon Suk Yeol appeared for questioning Saturday in connection with a special counsel investigation. The investigation centers on serious insurrection charges tied to his martial law declaration on December 3. This appearance comes just 85 days after his impeachment and two weeks after the probe officially began.

Former president Yoon Suk Yeol arrived at the Seoul High Prosecutors Office at 9:56 a.m. He walked through the main entrance without speaking to reporters. The formal questioning started shortly afterward at 10:14 a.m. This marked the first time in five months that former president Yoon Suk Yeol appeared before an investigative body. In January, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials arrested and questioned him over earlier charges.

The current allegations focus on Yoon’s attempt to enforce martial law. Investigators say he ordered the Presidential Security Service to resist arrest attempts in January. Furthermore, they accuse him of instructing officials to delete military-related classified data after announcing martial law. Although Yoon’s legal team had asked for him to enter through an underground lot, the request was denied. As a result, he used the main public entrance.

Shortly after his arrival, his legal team released a statement. They accused the special counsel of using the event for political theater. The team argued that publicly exposing the suspect violated basic rights. They urged the investigators to avoid turning legal proceedings into public spectacles. Yoon’s appearance at the Seoul High Prosecutors Office carries symbolic weight. Years ago, he served in this same building as a lead prosecutor. He once led a special counsel team against former president Park Geun-hye for a major corruption case.

Despite his past role, Yoon’s current legal troubles have shifted the narrative. Many now watch closely as the investigation unfolds. In summary, former president Yoon Suk Yeol’s legal fate remains uncertain. However, the ongoing probe marks a dramatic chapter in South Korea’s political and legal history.
