Mongolia and South Korea are set to open a Joint Rare Metals Research Center in November 2025. This center aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the rare metals industry. Specifically, it will focus on rare earth elements and rare metal ore enrichment technologies. The project represents a major step toward strengthening ties and boosting technological capabilities.
The new laboratory will be established at the Geological Research and Analysis Center, a state-owned company in Mongolia. By housing the Joint Rare Metals Research Center there, the two countries plan to share expertise and conduct joint research. Moreover, they will work on adapting and localizing enrichment technologies developed in South Korea for use in Mongolia. This approach will help Mongolia become more self-reliant in processing its rare metals.
Besides research, the center will emphasize human resource development. It will train specialists in rare metals enrichment technologies, which is essential for expanding Mongolia’s mining industry. In addition, the center will facilitate cooperation between companies in both countries. This cooperation can lead to joint ventures and increased investment in the rare metals sector.
Recently, Dashpurev Buriad, Director General of the State Administration Department and State Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources (MIMR) of Mongolia, met with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) project team. KIGAM acts as the implementing agency for South Korea. The project benefits from grant aid provided by the South Korean government, which highlights the strategic importance of this collaboration.
The Joint Rare Metals Research Center will play a vital role in securing supplies of rare metals needed for modern technologies. These metals are crucial components in electronics, renewable energy, and other high-tech industries. Therefore, the center’s work will not only support Mongolia and South Korea but also contribute to global technological advancements.
In conclusion, the Joint Rare Metals Research Center will foster innovation, enhance skills, and promote economic cooperation. The initiative promises to boost the rare metals industries in both countries and create long-lasting partnerships.
