South Korea announced an ambitious plan to train half a million drone warriors, highlighting the growing role of unmanned systems. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back revealed the initiative at the Army’s 36th Infantry Division base in Wonju. He said the division would serve as the first dedicated training ground for drone operations.
The drone warriors initiative focuses on two pillars. First, every soldier will earn drone credentials and gain hands-on experience. Second, the military will strengthen ties with the domestic drone industry. These efforts aim to enhance battlefield readiness while giving veterans valuable post-service skills.
The Defense Ministry allocated 20.5 billion won, or about $15 million, to support the project. This funding is part of the 66.3 trillion won budget for 2026. Officials plan to purchase thousands of small training drones with locally produced motors and batteries. They will also expand infrastructure and create large-scale training programs.
Pilot programs will begin later this year across all branches of the armed forces. Leaders expect the 36th Division to act as a test bed for new drone technology and artificial intelligence integration. Lessons from this unit will shape practices across the wider military.
Officials also plan to create additional specialized units. These teams will focus on testing small drones and counter-drone technologies developed by private companies. Each unit will tailor its trials to specific mission requirements.
Minister Ahn compared the initiative to a past effort by President Kim Dae-jung. That program trained soldiers in IT skills during the late 1990s. Ahn said the new program could transform young South Koreans into world-class drone warriors while boosting national strength.
