Song Joong ki returns to melodrama with My Youth, his first project in the genre since Descendants of the Sun. In this new JTBC series, he takes on the role of Woo hae, a former child actor who now works as a florist. Chun Woo hee stars alongside him as Jae yeon, an entertainment company team leader and his first love. The story follows their emotional reunion as they reconnect years after parting.
The actor, best known for roles in Vincenzo, Reborn Rich, and Space Sweepers, said he felt excited to return to this genre. At a press conference in Seoul, he explained that melodrama always appealed to him. Reading the script for My Youth made him feel the same thrill he experienced earlier in his career.
Song reflected on his past projects, noting that many of his characters lived in unrealistic worlds. This time, he wanted to portray an ordinary character that audiences could relate to. Filming Woo hae’s story gave him the chance to capture a more grounded and heartfelt performance.
Director Lee Sang yeop, who previously worked on Yumis Cells, described My Youth as a quiet yet witty drama. He said the show explores how far love can endure and how relationships grow through life’s changes.
Song Joong ki emphasized that reunion is one of the drama’s central themes. He explained that stories about meeting an old love again carry excitement and emotional depth. This element made the project especially meaningful to him.
While acknowledging the pressure after the massive success of Reborn Rich, Song said he views it as motivation. He added that audience love for his past projects gives him responsibility, but not overwhelming stress.
My Youth showcases Song Joong ki in a fresh light, trading adrenaline-filled roles for a florist’s quiet strength. The drama premieres Friday on JTBC, promising audiences a moving story of reunion, romance, and rediscovery.
