Members of the Taiwan People’s Party are preparing for Ko Wen-je bail efforts as they await his possible release. Supporters of the former Taipei Mayor plan to gather outside the Taipei District Prosecutors Office to greet him personally.
The court has offered Ko Wen-je bail at NT$70 million (US$2.28 million). However, Ko decided to consult with lawyers before making a decision, postponing his choice until Monday. TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang stated that the party is ready to assist in securing his release. He also emphasized that party lawyers will do everything possible to persuade Ko to accept the bail offer.
Ko Wen-je expressed hesitation about paying such a large sum. He reportedly did not want to feel obligated or owe favors to anyone. In a previous case, the Taipei District Court had approved a similar bail offer. Yet prosecutors successfully appealed to the Taiwan High Court, and the court reversed the decision. This history may have influenced Ko’s caution.
Given the financial burden, Ko postponed his decision on posting bail until a Monday afternoon meeting. Meanwhile, Huang said he remained confident that Ko could be persuaded to accept the offer and secure his freedom. Huang further pledged to use all available methods to convince Ko, ensuring his release.
Supporters are reportedly mobilizing through social media, planning to gather at the Taipei District Prosecutors Office. Reports suggest that at least 300 people from Taichung intend to travel to Taipei to show support. Huang added that Ko is expected to address his supporters with a prepared speech once released.
In the coming hours, all attention will focus on whether Ko Wen-je bail negotiations succeed. The Taiwan People’s Party continues to rally supporters and provide legal assistance. Party officials stress that their priority remains Ko’s safe and swift return.
If Ko accepts bail, the gathering outside the prosecutors’ office could become a significant show of public support. The TPP has urged supporters to remain peaceful while celebrating his potential release.
Ko Wen-je bail efforts reflect both the political weight of the former mayor and the organizational capacity of his party. Observers note that public turnout could signal broader support for Ko in the future.
